Every August, something remarkable happens on Breezy Hill in Springfield, Vermont.

Stellafane—meaning ‘Shrine to the Stars’—is much more than an astronomy convention.
Founded by the Springfield Telescope Makers, it is considered the birthplace of amateur telescope making in America. Visitors come to view handcrafted telescopes, attend lectures, participate in telescope-making workshops, observe the night sky, and meet fellow astronomy enthusiasts.
The 90th Stellafane Convention takes place August 13–16, 2026 on historic Breezy Hill in Springfield, Vermont. This year’s theme celebrates Dark Skies and includes telescope competitions, presentations, workshops, youth activities, solar observing, nighttime observing sessions, and a keynote by Ruskin Hartley, Executive Director of Dark Sky International.
Unlike many astronomy festivals, Stellafane celebrates people who build, modify, and improve their own telescopes. Walking through the telescope fields is like touring an outdoor museum of engineering and creativity.
Take time to explore historic downtown Springfield, local restaurants and cafés, boutique shopping, the Black River, hiking and cycling trails, the Hartness House, and nearby covered bridges. This year, the premiere of the film Stellafane and Beyond will take place on August 14 celebrating Springfield and the Telescope Makers.
