Celebrate Russell Porter: Springfield’s Artist, Explorer, and Stargazer

Springfield, Vermont has always been a place where creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation meet. Few people embody that spirit more fully than Russell Porter, a Springfield native whose remarkable life connected art, engineering, exploration, astronomy, and community in a way that still inspires people today.

Born in 1871, Porter was an artist, engineer, cartographer, amateur astronomer, and Arctic explorer. His curiosity took him far beyond Vermont, but his legacy remains deeply rooted here in Springfield. In 1923, he founded the Springfield Telescope Makers Club, known to many as Stellafane, which helped put Springfield on the map for generations of amateur telescope makers and stargazers.
This year, Springfield will celebrate Porter’s life and influence with a special exhibit at Gallery at the VAULT, running July 23 through October 13. The show will highlight Porter’s many talents and his lasting impact on Springfield’s identity as a community of makers, thinkers, artists, and innovators.

The celebration will extend beyond VAULT, with additional displays at the Springfield Town Library, the Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the new Stellafane/Art & Historical Society Museum at 100 River Street. Together, these locations will offer residents and visitors a chance to explore Porter’s story from multiple perspectives: his art, his engineering mind, his adventures, and his role in shaping one of Springfield’s most beloved traditions.

An opening reception will be held at VAULT on August 7 from 5 to 6:30 PM. The evening will include a short presentation by Rick Hunter of Stellafane, who will share more about Russell Porter and the extraordinary community of telescope makers that grew from his vision.

For visitors looking for meaningful things to do in Springfield, VT, this exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to experience the town’s creative and historic character. Springfield has long been known for its rich history, inventive spirit, and vibrant local arts scene, and Porter’s story brings all of those threads together.
